Fire Pit Season: Creating a winter backyard escape.

Are you feeling those winter blues creep in? Many retreat indoors this time of year, but being outside brings us so much joy. At Wellgevity Landscapes, we never stop finding ways to make the most of the outdoors, even if it’s just our own backyard.

That’s where a fire pit area becomes so important. Especially here in the South West, where winters can be long but stunning with open skies, crisp air, and stargazing around a crackling fire. It’s the perfect place to catch up with friends or cook dinner with the kids; a fun, screen-free school holiday activity.

Tips for Creating Your Fire Pit Space

1. Choose the Right Spot

Pick a safe, sheltered area away from overhanging branches. Make sure it’s close enough to your home for easy access on those chilly nights.

2. Layout, Edging & Surface

Once you've chosen your spot, create a sense of place. We love using Corten steel edging to define the zone. Pair it with compacted gravel, stone pavers, or recycled bricks for that timeless, rustic look.

3. Comfort & Style

Low, sturdy seating like timber benches, granite stools or rustic log seats work beautifully. Have a fire pit kit ready with chunky throws, outdoor cushions, and a fire-starting bundle, ready to go when the mood strikes.

4. Lighting

Subtle path lights or festoon lighting add that magical glow and help set the mood.

Fire Pit Styles to Consider

Portable Pits

Perfect for smaller gardens and for those who like flexibility. Look for a model with a lid (great for doubling as a table when not in use) and consider adding grill accessories for cooking and a cover to protect it.

Sunken Pits

Want a feature that turns heads? A sunken fire pit adds drama and also offers a bit of wind protection. Ideal for contemporary garden styles.

Built-In Brick or Stone

Know exactly what you’re after? Incorporate a permanent fire pit into your landscape design for a seamless, year-round entertaining zone.

Our Teams Favourite Simple Fire Recipe Ideas

The best part about a fire pit? Cooking over it. Less mess in the kitchen and so much flavour. Here are some favourites for your next night under the stars:

🥔 Campfire Loaded Potatoes

Wrap in foil and cook in the coals for 45–60 mins. Once soft, split open and load with butter, cheese, sour cream, bacon bits & chives.

(Try pulled pork or spicy beans for a hearty twist!)

🧀 Gooey Cheese & Herb Damper

Make a quick dough (SR flour, olive oil, salt, water), add cheese and fresh herbs. Wrap in foil and bake for 25–35 mins. Serve with butter while warm.

🍢 Veggie & Halloumi Skewers

Thread halloumi, capsicum, red onion, zucchini & cherry tomatoes onto skewers. Brush with olive oil & herbs, then grill over the flame.

🔥 Charred Corn with Lime Butter

Cook corn cobs (in husks or foil) for 10–15 mins on the outer edges of your fire. Peel and slather with lime butter and chilli flakes.

🍫 S’mores with a Twist

Sandwich marshmallow, chocolate, and banana between two biscuits or Tim Tams. Wrap in foil, heat by the fire, and enjoy.

🐓 Fire Pit Chicken Thighs

Marinate in lemon juice, garlic, smoked paprika, and olive oil. Grill over fire until crispy. Serve with damper and fire-roasted veggies.

🥪 Campfire Jaffles (Kid Favourite!)

Grab a camping jaffle iron and let the kids join in on the fun! Fill with:

  • Leftover bolognese or spaghetti

  • Baked beans & cheese

  • Ham, pineapple & BBQ sauce

  • Even just Nutella & banana for dessert!

Butter the outside of your bread, add your fillings, clamp it shut, and toast over the fire until golden and crispy.

OR just a good old fashioned marshmallow on a stick & a red wine.
