The Beauty of a Native Garden.

Updated: Nov 5, 2024

As we embrace life in the breathtaking South West of Western Australia, with its extremes of dry, scorching summers and wet, chilly winters, we are continually inspired by the resilience and beauty of our native flora, which is why we choose to incorporate these incredible plants into our landscaping. Surrounded by the stunning Indian Ocean and nestled in a town filled with locals & holiday homeowners, we see firsthand how native plants can create vibrant, sustainable, and hardy gardens. These beautiful plants not only enhance the natural beauty of our surroundings but also play a crucial role in supporting local wildlife, fostering a rich ecosystem right in our backyards.

Let’s explore the reasons why we love native gardens.

Bright & Aesthetically Appealing

At this time of year, the colourful blooms of native plants stand out beautifully. From the striking kangaroo paws to the cheerful native daisies and fragrant Geraldton wax, there's a diverse range of plants to suit every taste. The robust forms of native shrubs and trees offer texture and structure, making for an eye-catching garden.

Colours of the Seasons

Native plants bloom at different times of the year, providing continuous colour and interest throughout the seasons. Some of our favourites we’ve been eyeing off lately.

  • Summer: Bright blooms like kangaroo paws flourish, attracting pollinators.

  • Autumn: Rich hues from native daisies and golden wattles create a warm palette.

  • Winter: Some natives, like the beautiful Boronia, bring colour and fragrance during the cooler months.

  • Spring: A burst of life with flowering banksias and stunning wildflowers, adding vibrancy to the landscape.

Natural Harmony

Native plants thrive in their home climate, benefiting from the right soil and temperatures. This natural adaptation means they enhance the garden effortlessly, requiring minimal care. Their resilience to local conditions makes them a perfect choice for low-maintenance landscaping.

Wildlife Attraction

A common request from clients is to create gardens that attract wildlife. Native plants are the best way to invite butterflies, bees, and birds into your space, as they provide essential food sources and habitats that these creatures thrive on. For example, flowering natives offer nectar for pollinators, while seed-producing plants provide nourishment for birds throughout the year. By incorporating water features and planting native grasses, we enhance the environment, creating safe havens for wildlife and encouraging them to visit and linger.

Low Maintenance

Unlike tropical gardens that can look a bit neglected during dry spells, native gardens remain vibrant and healthy. Native plants are well-suited to local conditions, requiring less water, fertilizers, and pesticides. This not only saves you time and effort but also promotes a healthier ecosystem.

Creating a native garden is not just about beautifying your space; it’s about embracing the local environment, supporting wildlife, and enjoying a low-maintenance landscape. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just beginning your journey, a native garden offers something special for everyone.
