What to Do Over the Winter Months in Your Garden

Don’t give up, there’s still so much love to give your garden during winter.

Winter is one of the most important times on the gardening calendar. A little effort now will help set your garden up to thrive in spring, think vibrant blooms, a productive veggie patch, and a low-maintenance outdoor space.

If you’re like us, the garden is more than just a backyard: it’s a safe space. A place to unwind, get your hands dirty, be creative, and slow down. Winter is a great time to reconnect with your garden, and yourself.

Winter Garden Checklist

1. Top up your soil

Your veggie patch deserves love all year round. Now’s the time to top it up with quality compost to replenish nutrients lost after summer’s harvest.

Plant your winter crops: broad beans, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, lettuce, onions, and peas. Keep this corner of your garden active; it’s the perfect winter hobby.

2. Prune for strength, shape & health

Winter is ideal for pruning deciduous trees and shrubs while they’re dormant. This helps control shape, improve airflow, and encourage healthy new spring growth.

Use clean, sharp secateurs and prune on dry days to avoid disease. Give flowering plants a tidy-up too; it sets them up to bloom beautifully come spring.

3. Clear out & compost

Remove old annuals, rake up fallen leaves, and pull up persistent weeds while the soil is soft. This helps stop pests and diseases from overwintering.

It’s also a great time to build up your compost; balance green (soft) and brown (dry) materials. Those fallen autumn leaves are perfect for your compost bin.

4. Create a cosy outdoor space

Winter doesn't mean saying goodbye to outdoor living. Create a retreat with comfy seating, soft lighting, and maybe a fire pit.

Whether it’s sipping red wine, toasting marshmallows with the kids, or cooking outside; your garden can still be your sanctuary.
